Student Wellbeing

The Resilience Project

In 2025, St John’s introduced the Resilence Project to our curriculum, with the students participating in weekly classes.

We saw the value for our students in cultivating greater positive emotions through exploring and coming to recognise the personal traits of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM), along with developing their Emotional Literacy, Connection and Physical Health.

It is also our belief that the more positive emotion you experience, the more resilient you will be, with resilience and flexibility being necessary for our children and families as we face this fast paced, ever-changing life of the 21st Century.

Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) are the cornerstones of the Resilience Project Education Program which was founded by Hugh van Cuylenburg:

  • Gratitude:  Practicing gratitude allows us to pay attention to what we have, increasing feelings of happiness and leading to a more positive outlook on life.
  • Empathy:  Developing empathy fosters deeper connections, increases our likelihood of acting kindly, and helps us experience positive emotions.
  • Mindfulness:  Mindfulness allows us to be responsive to our experiences rather than reactive, and to live with greater balance, presence and connection.
