Following our Premier’s announcement of an extension of the 7-day lockdown that commenced 28^th May 2021, we confirm the following for our school community:

• Friday 28th May has been declared a Student Free Day
• Monday 31st May to Thursday 3 June – Students will undertake Remote Schooling
• Friday 4th June – Wellness Day – Student Free Day
• Monday 7th June to Thursday 10th June – Students will continue Remote Schooling

St John’s School will be closed during this time and children will be required to remain at home, except  where family circumstances require students to be supervised at school according to the specific criteria outlined through our communication to families.

We appreciate that this is a very challenging time for all in our community and your cooperation with the  school closure is very much appreciated.

Our direct communication with families will continue through Skoolbag, Operoo and Seesaw.

Please remember we are here to support you and your child /children during this time.

The whole school celebrated Catholic Education and Reconciliation Week with a Liturgy in the hall.

Students were seated in a circle to represent the yarning circle around a prepared site of material and other items. In the middle of the circle were cloths representing the colours of the Aboriginal Flag- red, black and yellow. Around the circle, pieces of gum trees and bark were placed with a red candle to represent fire and light. The crown of thorns was placed in the centre, to represent the pain and suffering of Jesus and His understanding of the need for reconciliation for all.

As a community we acknowledge we are on the sacred land of the Gurnai Kulin Nation/People.  We honour the past and present Aboriginal People who lay the foundation for the rights of Aboriginal peoples. We honour all the unsung Aboriginal heroes who carved their footprints in the sands of time and we thank them for the gift of their unique culture. We also celebrated a significant moment in Australia’s history, when Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, the leader of our country at that time, said “Sorry” to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Reconciliation is more than a word- reconciliation takes action!

Students participated through prayer, singing and a short video to try to understand a little more about what Reconciliation Week means to us as a community and also to the Aboriginal people of today and the future.

We reflected on what actions we can do with our heart and minds to keep Reconciliation alive at St John the Baptist School.

Our students have been preparing for the House Cross Country Event to be held on the school grounds on Thursday, 13th May. This is a whole school event where all students are encouraged and well supported in their participation. Students may wear colors in support of their House.

Qualifiers will go on to represent St John’s at the District Cross Country event on Friday 23rd May at Cardinia Recreation Reserve.

 

Preparations are underway for celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation this month. There are two Parish Masses at which candidates will be receiving the Sacrament at St John’s Church Koo Wee Rup, Sunday 23rd May and Sunday 30th May, both at 9.30am.

We pray for these young people and trust the Holy Spirit will be a guiding influence in their thoughts and actions throughout their lives.

Please take note that due to a school closure day on Monday 19th April, students commence Term 2 on Tuesday 20th April.
